From New York to Florida and Egypt to Qatar, new and unique museums are making their debut this year. What kind of artifacts will they have? Who designed them? When do they open so you can plan your trip? In this article we’ll explore the 5 most anticipated museums of 2019.

One Thousand Museum – Miami, Florida
The One Thousand Museum in Miami Florida is one of the final projects designed by Zaha Hadid before her death in March of 2016. This building is no exception to any of Hadid’s other projects and mimics the energy of the city where it stands. Enthusiasm for this building is obviously swelling as construction comes to a close and is expected to be completed by the end of 2019 but a sense of melancholy creeps up for architects and design enthusiasts too.
This museum will be close to 700 feet tall reaching over 60 stories with more than 80 units. The PBS profiled the extreme difficulty both designing and constructing this skyscraper would have. It’s said that this has been one of the most ambitious architecture projects to date. The late Zaha Hadid would be proud to see her work come to fruition.

Statue of Liberty Museum – New York, New York
The Statue of Liberty is arguably the most famous landmark in the United States, but by the end of 2019, old Lady Liberty will have a guest on her island. The aptly named Statue of Liberty Museum will not only house the entire history of the Statue of Liberty but also the original torch designed by Bartholdi that was placed on the statue in the late 19th century.
This 26,000 square foot museum was designed by the American architecture firm FXCollaborative and will cost over $70 million when construction is completed. The museum will house the history of the statue, the design that went into it, the need for liberty and is said to give a deeper understanding to the meaning of the statue. The museum will feature a green rooftop to mimic the green of the statue, where visitors can have an uninterrupted view of the Statue of Liberty and the city beyond it.

Academy Museum of Motion Pictures – Los Angeles, California
By the end of 2019, the city of Los Angeles will be home to the world’s premier movie museum. It seems very fitting that this museum would call Los Angeles home just like many of the people featured in the exhibits did. The space for this museum is being built within the Saban Building, formerly the May Company Building, on Miracle Mile and was designed by Renzo Piano in collaboration with Gensler.
This new museum will feature a 1,000 seat theater to display famous films along will a terrace that provides you with an exquisite view of Hollywood from above. The spherical structure allows its visitors to view the world in an entirely new way than they could before, much like the famous films do for the audiences that watch them.

Grand Egyptian Museum – Giza, Egypt
The competition to design the museum for the pyramids of Giza was steep to say the least. More than 1,500 architects from around the world sent in their designs hoping to be awarded the once in a lifetime opportunity to pay homage to one of the Seven Wonders of the World.
Ultimately the honor was given to Heneghan Peng Architects, an award winning construction firm based out of Europe. Heneghan Peng Architects have won different awards such as the RIBA back in 2006 as well as being nominated for both the Mies van der Rohe Award and the Stirling Prize in 2013.
Though the construction on the building has been lengthy it’s expected to be well worth the wait. The building is just now nearing completion in 2019 and has come a long way since the Egyptian president Hosni Mubarak laid the foundation stone in 2002. The building will have cost well over $1 billion when construction is all said and done.
This massive 5.2 million square foot structure is made up of a series of triangle patterns that are intended to mimic the look and feel of the pyramids that it’s made to honor. The inside will house artifacts from the pyramids and display their history throughout the building. The most anticipated exhibit in the museum however has got to be the presentation of King Tutankhamun’s possessions.

The National Museum of Qatar – Doha, Qatar
The National Museum of Qatar was designed by the inimitable Jean Nouvel and much like her other world class buildings, this new structure will offer us something we’ve never seen before. This building looks like it belongs on another planet or in a sci-fi movie.
Each part of this structure is made in the image of the country’s surrounding desert. Each connecting part is made to look like a desert rose and the building itself is even the same beige as the sand. This museum will house artifacts that define the country and its rich history. From artifacts regarding oil and gas to trade and the Persian Gulf.
