While you can purchase several flat panel LCD or Plasma televisions for almost the same amount as a single 24" monitor, when connecting them to a computer there are some differences to note.  The main thing is the resolution. A HD 42" low end television typically has a native resolution of 1024x768 compared to a 22" widescreen monitor 1680x1050. You can see that the resolution capabilities of a monitor are much higher resulting is a superior image quality. If you are after performance and a super sharp image your money would be best spent on a dual 22" or 24" LCD monitor set up.
